Roger C Purcell (*1954) studied clarinet starting at the age of 10 with his Grandfather, "Chick" Purcell, a professional clarinet and saxophone player from Manchester. In 1970 to 1973 he continued his studies under Leonard Foster, at the Royal Manchester College of Music and subsequently at the Royal Northern College of Music from 1973 to 1975. Roger is an experienced teacher and freelance player, who has played jazz and worked on many shows. He has also done orchestral work as well as playing in clarinet quartets and wind quintets on BBC radio and done several recitals with the pianist Martin Roscoe, playing much popular repertoire over many years.

As well as playing he has also written publications for Astute Music including The Advanced Edition: Clarinet Technique, Scaling the Heights and duets called Take Two for both clarinet and saxophone.

We are delighted to present here three great new publications from Emerson Edition called Clarinet Artistry. This is a set of 101 original progressive studies for solo clarinet split over three volumes. These studies cover a wide range of styles and are designed to help the player improve their technique and musicianship.
